Thorpedro Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 Well, sorry, but that's completely BS. While it certainly is harder to recognize hungarian people's background from their accents - us being a much more homogeneous nation than the english - you certainly CAN tell a lot about people judging by how they speak. There are at least ten dialects (check this ), and countless slangs used by countless subcultures. So maybe you should learn a bit of hungarian, listen to tapes, people talking, etc. :) Learn hungarian gosh you're kidding me buddy:D I speak it pretty clear and polite so it doesn't really need any improvements at all. I rather do some rock and roll shit:P As for the bullshit that ain't so bull:D you said practically the same thing i did, only you adding that little intel about the lovely hun dialects. But as far as this whole thing goes it doesn't really make any difference in our life does it I didn't learn my english in school, matey. B) I'm prepared, believe me. That's really great stuff, honestly i mean it, you were born abroad, or spent lotsa yearz there in your early childhood, wish i could have done it, and more of us would have been gifted with such a chance. You don't really learn english at school only basics, real stuff comes in real life. The thing is and plz nobody get me wrong, but i meet at least 2 people each week, english people who will say oh my good you speak so damn bloody well, and lots of them say you fuckin speak better than some of us brits. Now after this you tell me, that i'm beein a smartass. May i ask just out of curiosity you're actually livin abroad and using the language on a daily basis, including speach, radio, music, movies, and thinking?
Raven Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 sounds like youre only coming here to brag about your english skills.

I'm hungarian, never lived in english-speaking country (lived in Italy for about 2 years, though, early training), but well educated on my own. It took 12 years to get here, would've been easier abroad, I agree, but still. I can watch every movie without subtitles; with a little practice I can imitate most of the accents (british, american: mess'eppee redneck / manhatten, australian, jamaican, whatever), and I translate short stories, later maybe novels in my spare time. I read a lot, fantasy and sci-fi stuff in english. But don't misunderstand me, this language is not the holiest in my life, it's just a tool, and I use it for good. Well, I actually HAVE TO use it nowadays. At least it's not as bad as russian, gee. And I hardly believe that I have to do more to improve myself. sounds like youre only coming here to brag about your english skills. Not only about his skills, but about how he achieved them. Well, congrats, be proud of yarselv.
Arwy Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 I think most of us (in this topic) didn't learn English at school. The day before yesterday I went for my advanced English language exam certification and I'm only in the 10th class (so it'd be interesting if I learnt all this at school) and I've never been abroad more than 7 days in a row. And I've never been to any English speaking country. The only thing that I can thank to the education at school is a part of the English grammar (tenses) and some expressions. BUT I think Hungarian language teaching isn't very bad if you go to a "kéttannyelvû" class... what's it exactly in English? :D

I came here for some chat that's it. Just because i say things and propably defend my statements it doesn't mean i'm here to praise myself. As i always say the real achievement is not when you learn your first foreign language it's when you get rid of the hungarian way of thinking. I'm a smiley and friendly guy, make sure you lads feel the same about yourselves and once you get it you'll realise what i meant. <_< I shouldn't say sorry, but sorry if anyone got me wrong. Talkin about accents, how did ya guyz like Badman's in GTA4? It was just soo freakin funny :D :D :D Spot on

-Gio- Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 I played with GTA IV and I think Niko has got a very funny accent. :)
Thorpedro Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Well, I haven't played with GTA4, but I like Cesar's accent in San Andreas  Haha sooner or later you gonna have to:):) here you can watch badman:D, there's an annoyin echo effect, but better than nothin:D:D Talkin about voices, don't know if you watched sopranos or prison break in english. The guy who does the dubbing for Ken Rosenberg playz the fbi guy Mahone in PB, and agent Dwight Harris in sopranos, is the same guy you would recognise as Sam form Mafia. Having played those gamez for endless hours, it gives a funny twist watchin those moviez:D
tenderlumpling Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 Haven't played GTA4. I'm a phantasee / magicka / steampunk guy. As i always say the real achievement is not when you learn your first foreign language it's when you get rid of the hungarian way of thinking. I just want to add, that you should not get rid of hungarian way of thinking, because that's what you are. But yeah, in case of a language, you should develop more ways of thinking and easily switch between them.
nezolaca Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 The biggest problem about the hungarian school system that you can't really learn ANY language at school. (Only if you have a really-really good teacher, or something). Those 3-5 classes a week are hardly enough, so most of us who speak/write decent english learnt it from movies, novels, computer games, etc. It's the thing that I would do something about if I would be in charge of education. I mean, you shouldn't have to pay big sums for language school, that's why you learn languages at normal school, for free... I think there's some kind of conspiracy between english teachers and these language schools. It also doesn't really help that there are no subbed movies on TV, everything is voice-dubbed (which can also be pretty annoying). As much as I love english, and maybe want to make a living as a translator or somesuch (I already translate comics as a hobby), I never, ever want to get rid of my hungarian thinking... I think hungarian is a beautiful and exceptional language, and I'm pretty proud of it. B) And tender, you should at least try GTAIV, it is simply the most amazing game to appear on the PC in the last 5 years.

There are or will be, new types of television can change lang / sub, digital transmissions. 2. Tried for a minute or two at a friend's computer, but too much realism, too little gameplay. Like a big cutscene. Didn't like it. Most amazing games in the last 5 years are Penumbra and Eschalon, period -_- Besides, I never was into GTA, except for GTA2, that was fun.

Sorry my fault :) what i meant by thinking is basically to get rid of all those ugly well known hungarian habbits we are all familiar with and i always felt ashamed to be a hungarian for. 1. That's pretty right, with digital broadcasting you can offer different subtitles, and the option to change the soundtrack for the programme. Most tvs already have a bulit in reciever so anyone could enjoy it. BBC has a few of those but i never take the chance as i ain't too interested in welsh:D On the other hand their F1 coverage is just so damn bloody good. During the live race there's a separate channel for onboard camera coverage only, with 3 possible commentators, and once the race is over, they gonna keep repeatin it for at least till the next morning comes, so you will hardly miss it. The hungarian tv companies will all have the option to offer such great opportunities but sg tells me they just won't cause they don't give a damn.

I'm pretty proud, I think, even if we can't compete with other nations. I'm interested in welsh, though, recently I choose several welsh names for my second novel, a pseudo-fantasy comedy-drama :D
nezolaca Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Sorry my fault :) what i meant by thinking is basically to get rid of all those ugly well known hungarian habbits we are all familiar with and i always felt ashamed to be a hungarian for. Ugly hungarian habbits? Like what? I'm pretty sure the english have some ugly habbits too, so why not stick to our own national ones? -_- 1. Yeah, well, and who will bother to change to English, when it's available in hungarian? 2. I like it particularly because of the realism, it's just cool to drive through a real, living city. And gameplay's improved much since San Andreas, I think: much better TPS action, funny new game mechanisms, etc. But if you're not into it, then you're not into it.
tenderlumpling Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 1. Yeah, well, and who will bother to change to English, when it's available in hungarian? You, who complained and missed it. :D

After finishing Niko's adventures, played SA again, and it just felt so damn basic. The more advanced car handling just rocks not to mention that lovely ferrari sound when you put the pedal to the metal and just roar across the streets. Makes me go fuckin mental though that having bought the pc version i ended up with a half done product, not to mention hell knows if we gonna ever gonna get any extra content. As for the habbits, hell the brits have some disgusting stuff, but i'm sick with the majority of the hungarianz bein unable not to talk, think about money all the time, how to rip ya off, or use u for their own advantage. Noone has ever asked me here why i've got this watch or where's that car from. Can't say the same about the lads in hungary. I lived 2 yearz in Budapest too, good lord, now that was a proper show day to day how people shouldn't behave and live their lives. I don't mean to include you guyz in the comparison, but the majority of the hungarians are just bloody miserable, not everyone but the majority is. If they weren't, such programs as Monica, Balage show would have never existed and so on and so on. You, who complained and missed it. :D I think he meant, if it was avaiable in Hun and En, people wouldnt bother about the english soundtrack. And that's a pretty good point to be honest. Propably even i wouldn't bother. The dubbing actors most of the time do a truly crackin job. In several cases, making the movie better than it original is. Say American Pie is a very good example:D
Kromosome Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Hy guys, could anyone give me a hand in my question? I'm looking for a book to do some excercises and tasks in English. I know it's the end of the school year, but I would like to learn English as much as I can, in the summer holiday too. I will do the middle C (complex) level in English. I hope so I'll pass it. I guess it's not going to harm, by the way. :) So I'm looking for workbooks, preparatory books especially for Exams, which contain enoguh excercises, even really hard ones, and for my oral exam (Do NOT think for any "bad things"), I'm also searching books about the English language, Phrases in English, etc. Please tell me where can I buy these kind of books Online, which are excellents in your point of view. It will be a big pleasure from you! I'm greeting forward!

You should read books which improve your grammar (if you need it) and there's a book called 1000 Questions 1000 Answers, I think it's for way much easier language exams (maybe A), but it contains some expressions and sentences which you'd also find useful during your preparations. :) You can order books like these online (www.alexandra.hu), and on that site you can look for other books there which are similar to the ones I recommended you.

Well, we don't really have much to be happy about... of course, that doesn't mean that we should be so miserable, but hungarians are like that. Circumstances matter much. The movie "Everything is Illuminated" has a good scene about this, but I'm too lazy to write it down. :D And besides, I just spent a week in Budapest (I love that city, to be honest), and everyone was surprisingly nice: shopkeepers wished me a good day, unknown people "blessed me" when I sneezed on the street, etc. So it was kind of heart-warming. You, who complained and missed it. biggrin.gif I never watch TV. Couldn't agree more. After finishing Niko's adventures, played SA again, and it just felt so damn basic. Yeah, the PC version sucks ass, but after the third patch, it's almost playable. I just have too many damn taxis on the roads. :D Yeah, it's way better than SA, I just miss the barber shops, the gymns, etc. I don't know, why didn't they include stuff like that.

I thank you very much! I've been learning English for 9 years, but I'm going to buy these books naturelly, and also visit the site which you recommended to me. Anyway, I'll buy a book which has got grammatical excercises, but I do not need it very well. It's more important to learn more words, and prepare to the oral exam, and it's mean that I have to learn lots of phrases (but not only which are useful in writing or at the exams, but in England, and ordinary talking as well). To tell you the trouth, I know very much words & phares, but I feel not enoguh. :) So thank you for your recommendations, If I passed my exam, I would invite you to drink some beer! :D

Jelan Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Oh my god! I've just found my american teacher's blog :) . I think it's an interesting reading: http://www.swtiedeman.blogspot.com/
Sir_Zsim Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 Where are you my English-learning friends? This topic is so dead :(
Raven Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 i was on vent with 2 friends from the uk yesterday. it was the middle of the night so we got a bit bored and started looking for american vent servers on google. we wanted to wind the americans up by asking them if they got any cheeseburgers. most of them got pissed and either left the channel we were in or kicked us from the server. the interesting part is that no one semmed to be able to understand my friends british accent. every time he went into a channel and said "can any1 here understand me" he got no answer. he even tried insulting them "you fucking bastards" but still got no answer. it was fucking hilarious cos we asked like 30+ people and didnt get a single positive reply. one of them couldnt even recognise the language and pretended to be replying to us in chinese to make fun of the language my friend used. that really made me fall of my chair. we eventually found a californian guy on a server who was friendly and a bit talkative so i got into a conversation with him. i told my british friend to say "last" on vent and ask the US guy what he said. so he said "last. do you know what i just said?" then the american guy said "you said lost like the name of the tv show". honestly we couldnt stop laughing. its supposed to be same language but they didnt understand each other. :D
