bcom Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Has anybody read 'Prophet without honour' by Ragnar Tornguist? I have just finished. I LOVE IT! I could have written it to the 'Könyv' topic, but the book was written in English. :) It is a sci-fi novel placed into the world of Anarchy Online. The full text can be downloaded at anarchyonline.com for free.

tenderlumpling Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Strange, that word is only 37 years old? I would have guessed that its at least from the 19th century... It seems, no prequels were written before the 50's, the actual word was first coined in an article, in 1958. According to Wiki, it's indeed a neologism. Weird  So common and popular nowadays. It's hard to believe, that it's so new.
Hero44 Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Oh yes, God exists, and he made "Vidámvasárnap" on ATV. Ridiculous, religions are for the weak. Show me a God who tells me the reason of innocent people dying every day because of meaningless wars for money. I guess you can't. ;)
efperel Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Show me a God who tells me the reason of innocent people dying every day because of meaningless wars for money. I guess you can't. ;) The reason is simple, yet not: Humans are not gods, so they are controlled by their needs If you simply ask God for help, that means he didn't do a good job while creating us, if we can't even save ourselves.
Arwy Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 The reason is simple, yet not: Humans are not gods, so they are controlled by their needs If you simply ask God for help, that means he didn't do a good job while creating us, if we can't even save ourselves. Ok, he did a shit job, that's all. So God can't do a good job. So he's looser. Of course, only if he exists. Ya, and if even God can't do good job then how could we? :D
efperel Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Ok, he did a shit job, that's all. So God can't do a good job. So he's looser. Of course, only if he exists. Ya, and if even God can't do good job then how could we? :D I don't say he (or she) is a looser, he might have done it intentionally. My philosophy is simple: a) God doesn't exist B) Even if he exists, he created the evil, sadness and pain too, not just the positive things. I think he did this, because if everyone would be happy, it would be boring, so he created the evolution mean, so that he can enjoy all the drama, tragedy and suffering, which was the cause of his intentional sadistic work Of course it's only my theory, and I think point a) is way more plausible
Hero44 Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Point b is funny. I think you also like god-games where you can torture all the meaningless people, hahahaha....oh wait....that's unaccaptable. *slaps himself in the face* Seriously, religion says God is a rightful, wise man who only hurts the sinners. They say if u are a good person, then God will give you a shelter, and blahblahblah. Well, then those 1-10years old children who die accidentally from in a bomb attack a.) are the seeds of the devil and they are need to be erased from existing b. ) are the proof that religion can do me a favour. And we haven't talked about scientology. :D My favourite one. Everyone thinks Tom Cruise went totally crazy, but no! He just got richer than ever, If I were him, I'd do the same
Honi Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Let forget God and the Church! I have a book (Müller Péter- Jóskönyv, it's about I Ching) and there are some informations about the old spirits of the world. It says the spirits were managing the world, but they noticed that people are bad and they didn't hear the message of them. So, they said: " We give you the oar. Row! " I believe in destiny.

Informations? Müller Péter is the writer for those who are lazy to pick Confucius or something like that. Müller and this kind of writers are a shame, annoying want-some-help? money-makers. Try ancient philisophers and support real writers, buying their works.

Try not to make some kind of scrap-philosopy from other people's salvaged thoughts, but make yours instead. Of course, I aggree, ancient philosophers are more authentic, maybe becouse the likes of Müller does the same, salvaging thoughts which others had thousands of years ago.

I accept every modern philosophy, but I won't accept, that a certain Müller, Coelho, Tolvaly and such, are actually getting rich, only by telling common truths and obvious stereotyped phrases, clichés, how to live a better life. C'mon, they actually in the top selling authors, while a hungarian writer of a quality, can't sell a thing, but in fact, there are some entertaining, and make-you-to-think books around the world. You must develop your own philosophies, your own truths and own thoughts, not rely on others', but if you still do, do not pay for it, go to a library. (I mean, most of Müller's books are: how to be happy, how to live life... c'mon, be somebody already, read novels, go to the movies, life itself is the greatest teacher of all, and art represents life, give it a chance). I.M.H.O.
Honi Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 Maybe you have right but your lines won't change my opinion about Müller. I find him a good writer though he collects the ideas of the great old philosophers. I take for granted you have read many books of Müller. My grandma had read a book of Müller and found that interesting. I could give her some Platon and Aristoteles too, but she can't understand it... is she fool? I don't believe it. There have to be some peple who collect the message of the olds. Everybody has his/her own opinion and we're different. Because of these is the world so many-coloured and so "silly" (not you) Sorry about my grammatic mistakes, please correct them! tender, your English is very good :) Koromsome, you can buy it for example on konyvnet.hu

I.M.H.O. Great idea! Let's choose random articles from wikihow.com and write a book of each in English. We'll be famous and rich and praised and... oh, let's stop. What is so good in these? What is so good in famous writers (and actors, etc.)? They're in the media right... sooo they're telling us who should be our ideal, whose 'teachings' should we follow, who should we love and who is good at all? Ay... mon. Classicists might be right - let's copy the Greeks, it can be very - VERY - profitable. Let's tell the sheep what, when and how to do! Let's come upon world dominion! Which 15-17 years old gamer beauty will be my fellow ruler? :P Thanks for reading so much new-wave sarcasm :D Edited March 15, 2009 by Apollon
Arwy Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Ahhhh.... my advanced exam is 71%, I PASSED IT! YEAH! I'm so happy :) [vigyor] [sm20] It could have been better though...
Honi Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Nice one! Congratulations! Hey people, could you advise me any good-english-grammar books? I've already got Kis angol nyelvtan (by Dohár Péter)...
Philip12 Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Hi, Let me "promote" an other book: Wilhelm Busch - Variations for One Theme /I translated the Hungarian title, don't know the original or how it is translated to English/. In it there are many good short stories, they are very interesting, thoughtful and exciting. You will find answers for questions like "Why does God let it happen?" and many others. Busch was a cleric and lived and worked during the Second World War, in the Third Empire (he survived the war). It was one of the best Christmas presents I have ever been given, really :-) PS.: Of course it's not a reply for the grammar book request. I can't advise anything better than "Small English Grammar". my father learned from it (he learnt English on his own) and was pretty good (he forgot much of it as a result of lack of practice).
SasOri-Sama Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Nice one! Congratulations! Hey people, could you advise me any good-english-grammar books? I've already got Kis angol nyelvtan (by Dohár Péter)... Live English Grammar? It's a pretty good grammar book, i used it last year.
Arwy Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Nice one! Congratulations! Hey people, could you advise me any good-english-grammar books? I've already got Kis angol nyelvtan (by Dohár Péter)... Last year I learned the grammar from English File for the entrance exam, I think in that book the whole is written down clearly and it's easy to understand :) But I think you should read a book written in English or just look at some lyrics of songs you like, it's easy to learn the grammar that way (I think :) ), you see some expressions and things like that so often that they just stick in your brain, even if you don't want it (I think) :D Btw, last weekend I had to translate from Hungarian to English (and from English to Hungarian) for German and Czech people, cause there was a dancing competition and some foreigner teams came here to Zeg :D It was totally cool, I enjoyed it :D but unfortunately I didn't get any money for it :( :D (they regret money for professionals, so they said 'it's good language practise for high school students' <_< ) And there I met the girl I did my oral exam with. Her written test's result was like mine (about 80-85%), but her oral exam was 59% (the requirement was 60%) so she appealed. And I thought the whole time that her oral exam was way much better than mine... the listening is in the oral exam too, so probably that's what se couldn't really make it, cause when we're speaking, she said quite good ideas/things.
Sensei007 Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Hi all Have a nice day :) I don't talk english very well My favourite movie is Back to the future
tenderlumpling Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 My favourite movie is Back to the future It seems, it's not your favourite movie, it's your drug. :D

Goode Who never ever learned to read or write so well But he could play the guitar just like a ringing a bell Go go Go Johnny go Go Go Johnny go Go Go Johnny go Go Go Johnny go Go Johnny B. Goode He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack Go sit beneath the tree by the railroad track Oh, the engineerswould see him sitting in the shade Strumming with the rhythm that the drivers made People passing by they would stop and say Oh my that little country boy could play Go go Go Johnny go Go Go Johnny go Go Go Johnny go Go Go Johnny go Go Johnny B. Goode His mother told him "Someday you will be a man, And you will be the leader of a big old band. Many people coming from miles around To hear you play your music when the sun go down Maybe someday your name will be in lights Saying Johnny B. Goode tonight." Go go Go Johnny go Go go go Johnny go Go go go Johnny go Go go go Johnny go Go Johnny B. Goode
