-Gio- Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Hm..Arwy you speak English very well. How many years have you learned it?
SasOri-Sama Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 It seems, it's not your favourite movie, it's your drug. :D He reminds me of Mitisz by the way. :D Same obsessive-compulsive behavior. :D When Mitisz became a fanatic of Radiohead I slowly started to hate that band. :D
Arwy Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 Hm..Arwy you speak English very well. How many years have you learned it? I started it in the 2nd class in elementary school, and i finished it last year (in 1st class in high school) by doing the entrance exam, so now I don't have to go to English lessons, but instead of them I go to advanced German, so it's cool I can speak German as well (but I personally think it's way much harder to learn than English) :) And in August I went to a private teacher (2x1,5 hour per week, but I was with another girl, so wasn't the whole lesson about me), and in February I did my advanced exam. I sent an e-mail to the girl I went to the private teacher, she failed her exams, although she did BME, not ECL (like me), both her oral and writing tests were under 60%. :( And (I already wrote it earlier) I met the girl I did my oral exam with, she failed the oral one too... :( Poor girls. But this was a bla bla, so the answer you wanted: I've learnt English for 8,5 years :) In elementary school, we had different teachers until the 6th class, in the 7th and the 8th it was the same... So it wasn't very systematic... The most of the grammar I learned at school, but most of my vocabulary is from games, song lyrics, and things like that... I think I really needed the private teacher too, she made me practice for the topics and she made my vocabulary wider/bigger (?) :D . So I think people need to go to a teacher first, just to make the whole thing clear in their heads. So, without these teachers I couldn't do this, despite of my vocabulary and grammar that I did the way it sounded better. Sing with me :D Chuck Berry Johnny B Goode Oh, Green Day did a cover of this, (but I don't really want to advertise them, cuz most poeple dislike the band)

German is way harder if you've learned English first. I hate German...while I can learn english words if I read them 2 or 3 times, I simply can't memorize german words. They are tongue twisters, long, absolutely no logic and there is this bullshit that everything ought to have a goddamn GENDER. I can't tell you how much I hate it.

Yeah, gender is the main problem in that language, but I love German as well :) I love Austrian people (at least Austrian dancer people, I mentioned before I was the Schwarz-Gold team's interpreter :) ) I think German is a "learnable" language also for the ones who learned English first, I'm one of the students who have the best grades both in the advanced and the beginner group :) But, unfortunately I'm just unable to hear what they say in Hörverstehen (except some words), that's my weak point :D

Now I'm at the secondary grammar school and here I can study English 14 lesson/week. But I learned much from games and movies same to you. I study German too. Yea, it's much more difficult, especially the grammar. I think I learn too much English so slowly I am going to forget speak German. :) I'll take the advanced exam too but I have to learn for it. Next year I am going to a personal teacher as you. I can speak a little English but I don't know the topics. And the topics are important to take the exam.

I think the topics are on the website of that kind of exam you'd like to pass (but only the title of them) (at least in the case of BME and ECL language exams)... and Exam Fright Killer: 50 Advanced Topics is a very useful book as well. :) Teacher is also good because of she/he can make you learn, when you go to the teacher, you don't say that Oh, I'll learn tomorrow, I still have some weeks until the exam, now I play some game instead of it..."... :D of course it isn't very cheap to hire a private teacher, but it's worth it. (I think)

By the way exams: i ll have my exams in two months (ok a bit less than 2) from every single subject ....The funny thing is i havent learnt anything yet .I know that i can i manage it but is sooo hard to sit by my table when the summer is comeing (im a private student) Even if i force myself to sit down and open my books, than i begin to fantasize bout what ll i do AFTER i did my exams. You have some plans for the summer?

No way. :D But i think the intermediate was pathetically easy, so i want to try a Cambridge CPE or a TOEFL instead of an ECL advanced.
joc009 Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 I 've learnt English since the 5th class of elementary school. But the education at the elementary school wasn't so good. I never studied for the lessons, never did homework and i couldn't say a simple sentence in English. But I always got five. :D I started learning English more seriously in the secondary school. It's much better than it was in the elementary school, but we have only three lessons a week. Now, I am in the third year and I want to take a language exam before the graduation. So, I started to go to a private teacher 3 months ago. I haven't got any problem with the grammar, but I haven't got vocablulary. So I decided I will improve my vocablulary. Could you advise me any books for this? I have these: Cambridge English Vocablulary 1-4, Target Vocablulary 1-3. I think they are good books for learning, but if you know any better books, please write.

Imho, it's much more better to learn it from these than from books specifically created to improve your vocab.

Raven Posted March 31, 2009 Posted March 31, 2009 well ive thought a lot about how english can be learnt effectively. you guys are never really gonna learn / speak english if you just chat to foreigners. get a microphone and talk on it in game. also hungarians tend to have a terrible accent, everyone should spend time trying to eliminate theirs. there are mistakes that are commonly made specifically by hungarians. be aware of your weak points and work on them. dont make it a pain in the ass for native speakers to listen to you. make sure your aim is to learn the language not pass your exams. if the fact that you can have a conversation with your english teacher or other english speaking hungarians in english without problems satisfies you then youre on the wrong path. these are my main pieces of advice. if you dont agree with me, nows the time to throw some shit at me :D *steps aside*

If I were a russian, I wouldn't even try to learn good pronounciation, it's cooler that way. :D Luckily there's a foreign teacher in my school, and I talk with him a lot, and he said my accent is really good, although it's a bit american. :D Probably because I learned english when I was 3, while watching Cartoon Network. :D
